You don't need to know 10,000 Japanese words to impress a Japanese person. You just need the right 10. These are the words that will make Japanese people smile, laugh, and immediately warm up to you โ words that carry culture, not just meaning.
I picked these based on 3 months of daily conversations with native speakers. These came up constantly. These are the ones that matter.
Word #1
ใใใใ (Yoroshiku)
Yo-ro-shi-ku
ููุฑุดููู โ ุฃุชุทูุน ููุนู
ู ู
ุนู
This word has no direct translation โ and that's what makes it magic. It means "I'm in your care," "please be kind to me," "nice to meet you," or "I look forward to working with you" โ depending on context. Japanese people use it dozens of times per day.
ใใใใใ้กใใใพใ๏ผ(Yoroshiku onegaishimasu!)
โ "Nice to meet you / I'm in your care!" (formal)
Word #2
ใชใใปใฉ (Naruhodo)
Na-ru-ho-do
ูุงุฑูููุฏู โ ุขูุ ุฃููู
ุงูุขู
The perfect "I see / Ah, I understand now!" reaction. Japanese conversations are full of small response words called aizuchi, and ใชใใปใฉ is the king of them. Use it while someone is explaining something and watch their face light up.
ใชใใปใฉใใใใใใใจใ๏ผ(Naruhodo, sou iu koto ka!)
โ "Ah, so that's how it is! Now I get it!"
Word #3
ใใใ ใใพใ (Itadakimasu)
I-ta-da-ki-ma-su
ุฅูุชุงุฏุงููู
ุงุณู โ ุจุณู
ุงููู (ูุจู ุงูุฃูู)
Said before every meal, this word is the Japanese equivalent of "bismillah." It literally means "I humbly receive" and is a way of expressing gratitude for the food, the people who made it, and the living things that gave their lives for it. If you say this before eating with Japanese people, they will be genuinely moved.
ใใใ ใใพใ๏ผ๐
โ Said with both hands together before eating
Word #4
ใใใ (Sugoi)
Su-goi
ุณูุบูู โ ุฑุงุฆุน! ู
ุฐูู!
The most flexible word in Japanese. ใใใ means "amazing," "incredible," "wow," "that's crazy," and about 50 other things. It works for good and bad situations alike. Master this word and you can react to almost anything in Japanese.
ใใใ๏ผใขใฉใใข่ช่ฉฑใใใฎ๏ผ๏ผ
โ "Wow! You can speak Arabic!?" (what Japanese people say to me every day)
Word #5
ใ็ฒใๆง (Otsukaresama)
O-tsu-ka-re-sa-ma
ุฃูุชุณููุงุฑูุณุงู
ุง โ ุชุนุจุช / ุฃุญุณูุช
Literally "you must be tired." This is how Japanese people acknowledge each other's hard work โ at the end of a workday, after a long effort, or when someone finishes something difficult. There's no good equivalent in Arabic or English. It's pure Japanese culture.
ใ็ฒใๆงใงใใ๏ผ(Otsukaresama deshita!)
โ "Good work today! You worked hard!"
Word #6
ใใฃใใใชใ (Mottainai)
Mo-t-tai-nai
ู
ูุชูุงููุงู โ ูุง ุญูู! ูุฏุฑ!
One of the most unique words in Japanese. It means "what a waste!" โ but it goes deeper than that. It carries a sense of sorrow for things not being used to their full potential. Japanese people use it for wasted food, unused talent, missed opportunities. This word has its own philosophy.
้ฃในๆฎใใฏใใฃใใใชใ๏ผ
โ "It's a waste to leave food uneaten!"
Word #7
้ ๅผตใฃใฆ (Ganbatte)
Gan-bat-te
ุบุงูุจุงุชูู โ ูุงููู! ุญุธุงู ู
ูููุงู! ุงุฌุชูุฏ!
The ultimate Japanese encouragement word. "Do your best!" "Keep going!" "You've got this!" When a Japanese person says this to you, it means they believe in you. When you say it back to them, it's one of the most heartfelt things you can express.
้ ๅผตใฃใฆ๏ผๅฟๆดใใฆใใ๏ผ
โ "Do your best! I'm cheering for you!"
Word #8
ใใใใใชใ (Shouganai)
Sho-ga-nai
ุดูุบุงูุงู โ ู
ุง ูู ุญู / ู
ูุชูุจ
The Japanese "it is what it is." There's nothing that can be done โ let it go. Japanese people use this to accept difficult situations with grace rather than frustration. There's something almost spiritual about it. Arab speakers will immediately connect it to the concept of ูุฏุฑ (qadar).
ใใใใใชใใญโฆๆฌกใฏ้ ๅผตใใใ
โ "Can't be helpedโฆ let's try harder next time."
Word #9

Ko-mo-re-bi
ููู
ูุฑูุจู โ ุถูุก ุงูุดู
ุณ ุนุจุฑ ุฃูุฑุงู ุงูุฃุดุฌุงุฑ
There's no word for this in any other language. Komorebi is the sunlight that filters through leaves and creates dappled light. It's a moment. A feeling. A single word for something that takes a whole sentence in other languages. This is why people fall in love with Japanese.
ๆจๆผใๆฅใฎไธญใง่ชญๆธใใใฎใๅฅฝใใงใใ

ุฑ
A phrase from the Japanese tea ceremony. It means "one time, one meeting" โ the idea that every encounter happens only once, and you must treasure it completely. This philosophy shapes how Japanese people approach hospitality, friendship, and life itself. When you say this to a Japanese person, they will know you truly understand their culture.
ไธๆไธไผใๅคงๅใซใ
โ "Treasure every encounter โ it will never come again."
Language is not just communication. It's a window into how people see the world. These 10 Japanese words aren't just vocabulary โ they're 10 ways Japanese people experience reality.
